OK I'm new at this so bare with me. During this year 2013 I hope to post a new photo everyday, these will be random with a topic and explanation underneath them. I sincerely hope that you enjoy looking at them feel free to comment, I am only learning at the moment so any help will be appreciated. I am going to post a few photos in this post as I started this project on the 1st of January. TODAY was the theme for the 1st what better way to describe the new year. SOMETHING NEW the kids got some new LEGO for Christmas. HEART was day three and I couldn't decide which picture I liked most. THE VIEW FROM HERE day four I have some amazing little plants in my garden. MOVEMENT I think this captures it just nicely. These are what I have done in the last five days so a bit later I will post the photos for the 6th.

Fantastic Idea having yourself a set challenge every day, can't wait to see how your photography develops, and what you come up with on the challenges. Loving the shots so far, the heart challenge the shot of the kids is brilliant Richard. but that last one for movement. superb. keep it up mate. P.S. what camera gear do you use. ?

A Pentax K100 digital SLR with a 70 - 300 mm and a 18 - 200 mm lens. I don't know if that means anything to you, doesn't to me yet. I brought it for the wife a couple of years ago she has done courses and is very much into scrapbooking both digital pages and on paper pages. It was through her Facebook that I found the site with the challenge.

Nice camera. Comparable to my Sony A200. You have better color off the bat with yours I think. I took a look at that 1.

You have set yourself quite a task Richard, you may find at times you will struggle to find 365 different idea's. I'd suggest letting people throw out some idea's. Personally I'd go with monthly themes.
Like this for instance..
Jan = Family Feb = Landscape March = Sunsets / Sunrises. April = Architecture May = Automotive June = People ect, etc,
These idea's of taking a new picture a day for the year have been done a lot and it can sometimes be hard enough to keep the challenge going with others on a photography forum doing it along side of you, let alone by yourself. So I hope you take on the advice of allowing others to help you along the way.
PS.... Remember to experiment with your photos and get out of your comfort zone. Get down low or climb up a ladder for a different perspective on a scene. Use natural light or use a torch in a dark shot for a different outlook and feel to the shot. Remember to keep your horizons level and take the time to really look at what you are about to take a picture of and if it could be taken from a different angle. Will a pole in the background of a car shoot look like it is growing out of the roof of the car? Then move around and take the shot from a different angle and height.
This should not only be used as a way to get to know your camera but a way to use it better by experimenting with it everyday. Try a new setting everyday, take a heap of photos that day using the one new trick as the main focal point.
Stick to one photo a day. You couldn't decided between two above that you liked, think of it as a photo shoot that the client only wants one single photo and the want you to pick it.
I will keep looking in on you and you progress bud. Good luck.
Cheers from Dean.

Hey guys thanks for checking this out. So who have I got here Matt (J50), Steve (Doodley), Matt (Gonzo) and Dean (Schuey). The reason I started this forum was not to show off what I can or can't do but to put the challenge out there. It's one thing to say "Oh I'm going to take a picture everyday." to yourself or to family but when you put the concept onto paper or a forum for others to see, it makes it more concrete/ important, if that make sense. Dean, know what you mean about running short on ideas and I will keep all suggestions in mind, at the moment I'm using a list from a site called fatmumslim, she is running a one for herself and has published the list. However I might need some blokey input, lol. This one has the theme of MINE, something that depicts something close to me, Whilst my children do not depict who I am, they are a large part of what I do. Left to right, Noah 7yo, Samuel 9yo and the one on the end Kieran 10yo the football player, Aussie Rules not Soccer. Thanks guys.

Awesome start Richard, really like the kids pics and the movement one as well. What site did you see the challenge on? My wife is big in scrapbooking as well, and I've been looking at learning our camera better as well since we haven't really messed with it as much other than family shots and I use it mostly for car shows. Great job and look forward to see more. ~Robo

I agree carkilla. Some cool family pics Richard. I bought my wife a nice Nikon about 2 years ago. About the only thing she'll let me do, is point and shoot. She has her settings the way she likes them. Personally, I think they make it a little harder to take a picture. But it is her camera. She was big into taking pictures of just about anything years ago. And that was with a Kodak slim camera.

OK here it is, I really wanted to do some night shots, and I really need two things, more practice and a tri-pod. Anyhow I waited until it got dark and wondered off today's topic STREET. Well I looked around and seriously my neighborhood is boring after dark on a Monday night. So the best I could come up with was my street sign, tomorrow's shot will be better and earlier I promise. On the upside it does have a nice contrast in the black and white.

Yeah a tripod does make night photography a little easier but if you think ahead you can rest your camera on a fence, on your car roof or on the ground to get a different perspective and use different light sources like a street light, your cars headlights, a flash light or even a candle. Take multiple shots using different settings and write down the various setting for each shot. Obviously when you view your pictures on your pc you will start top get an idea what works and what doesn't. Just make small changes to one thing at a time though, so you start to get the feel of how every setting can change the feel of your photography. Also why did you wait until it was completely dark to take night photography? Sunsets are great for pictures, wait until the sun has completely gone out of view and then start snapping away. Just remember to frame your subject, ie like the sunset. Clouds turning different colours. Try and get about a third of the screen filled with ground and the other 2 thirds filled with the sky as this is going to be the most dramatic part of your picture. Remember to keep your horizon straight in your picture. Silhouettes in sunrise and sunset pictures can look great, like a tree, a person, birds in the sky, etc, etc. Keep going mate, you have taken on a huge challenge that can be frustrating but fun as well. Cheers Dean. This was taken after waiting around 30 - 45 minutes for the right look. This was another long waiting shot, moving to a better position. Subject moved, so I moved again and again and again. This one I was absolutely drunk, I had been drinking for three straight days as I had a double four day pass to the Melbourne Grand Prix and I took a different person each day and my camera. At last years Bathurst, no need to tell you I was really drunk Non of the above just "happened" I had the camera set to the surrounding light and scenes at all times. I had the camera set how I wanted to take pictures at the zoo. I just made minor adjustments for each shot I took there. The Grand Prix, I had the camera set for fast action shots at all time and just had to keep an eye on exposure to the clouds that day. My mates BBQ, was just a quick picture of my daughter, pulled out my camera and quickly set it up and snapped away a few dozen shots as she blew some bubbles. My son was an inside shot and I took some from a distance and when I came up close he just had this look of amazement on his face about his own fingers. So yes a good pictures can come down to settings, knowing your camera, artistic vision and luck has a huge part of it as well. Then you can always use photoshop to manipulate what ever you take, like this on my old iphone 4 Keep it up bud.

Dean, if I can get just one of my pics to look like any one of yours I would be ecstatic, they are amazing. How long have you been taking shots like that? Did you do a course or did you just teach yourself?
As to waiting til it was really dark at the moment our sunsets are rather ordinary there is so much smoke about there are no colours in the sky at dusk, and I was going to light up the sign with a torch. Didn't really work on my own but I will keep trying.
Thanks for the encouragement though and if I have any questions I will ask. At the moment I'm just looking at web sites to learn about the terminology, over/under exposed, shutter speeds, aperture settings and so forth, it all seems a bit daunting to begin with but I will persist.
The topic for today is SOMETHING BEGINNING WITH "T", I have a couple of ideas so I go with those.
Also thanks to Cliff and Rob for taking a look hopefully I will have some decent shots by the end of the day.

Here it is Photo of the Day, SOMETHING STARTING WITH "T". These are the Tools I use everyday, sometimes they are a little more productive, I liked where it went with the depth and colours. I realise it looks a bit standard but I like it, the other options were tomatoes and traffic, not a lot of traffic about at the moment. One more thing on the list I'm using tomorrow's topic is PAPER, I'm not sure I want to do that topic so if anyone has any ideas I will take any suggestions.
